Englische Synopsis: I interviewed and filmed a group of students about their first year of school. After watching the footage I picked three kids to re-enact their story of an argument that took place in the schoolyard. Combining the three stories I wrote a script. Next I hired a casting director, set-up auditions with adult actors, and brought the students in to help cast their parts. We filmed each one sitting in on the session, interviewing the actors auditioning to play them. Afterwards each child chose an actor. After casting the actors the children each had the opportunity to direct the scene at a theatre near their school. As each one directed the adults through the re-enactment of the argument the story became something entirely new.
Englische Werkbeschreibung: There is always a subjective and emotional way of communicating an experience, where things become as real as your memory. Like in her former works Anna Gaskell sets the focus on these behaviours in social structures. The film, REPLAYGROUND presents a scene where the artist interviews a group of children in a kindergarten class. Within their conversations three of the children focus on a shared conflict. Because of their desire to revise the story these three children are invited to recreate the event. A casting director manages a series of auditions where the children interview actors for the role of themselves. Each child is filmed auditioning the different actors, we watch as they deliberate over whom will best represent them in the re-inaction. After choosing their adult selves, each child directs the actors through their individual version of the re-enactment of the argument. The children show the seriousness of their intent through their interpretation of the story. We watch as they struggle to maintain some kind of integrity within the social manners that they so quickly learn to mimic. After working with the children the three actors reinterpret by discussing the different points of view to find out what really happened. The actors perform their understanding of the of the children’s argument. As they perform the re-enactment, we see them confused and frustrated, as they can’t seem to agree on what took place during the conflict.
