A Grain of Sand (USA 2009) Moyenne Island Seychelles

Englische Synopsis: A mythical journey to one of the last remaining battlegrounds where the future of one man and an island stand against the ever-expanding reach of our insatiable desires. Brendon Grimshaw, a British national, was editor to some of the most important newspapers in Africa. But in 1972, he gave it all up to go and live on Moyenne Island, which he purchased for ten thousand pounds. In the thirty-six-years that he has lived on the island, Brendon and his friend, Rene Lafortune, planted sixteen-thousand trees, built 4,8 kilometres of nature paths, and brought and bred 109 giant land tortoises, creating an island of incredible beauty now worth 34 million Euros. Come with us on this journey and discover why an 82-year-old man fears his island will one day be destroyed.

Englische Werkbeschreibung: A Grain of Sand was filmed in the summer of 2007 and is an 83 minute documentary that tells the love story that came to be between Brendon Grimshaw and Moyenne Island. Brendon Grimshaw, a British national, was editor to some of the most important newspapers in Africa. But in 1972, he gave it all up to go and live on Moyenne Island, which he purchased for ten thousand pounds. In the thirty-six-years that he has lived on the island, Brendon and his friend, Rene Lafortune, planted sixteen-thousand trees, built 4,8 kilometers of nature paths, and brought and bred 109 giant land tortoises, creating an island of incredible beauty now worth 34 million Euros. But pristine tropical islands with beautiful eco-systems have become a rare commodity in a world that seems to measure everything in economic terms. And there is a voracious global appetite for places like Moyenne Island, which will be passed on to unknown hands when Brendon dies, as he does not have any children. And what does capitalism want to do with his island, you might ask? Well, it wants to apply its newly popular 5-star “eco-tourism” resort formula, which would effectively privatize Moyenne Island and offer it as a tourist destination to those rich enough to afford the up to 2000 euro per night price tag. With this accomplished, the developers, environmentalists and politicians involved would claim another success story. In their mind, they took a profitless piece of land and conserved the majority of its beauty. Who cares if the only people who will ever get to see that island again will have to be rich and on vacation? Who cares if you transform a temple of 16,000 trees with nature paths for all to visit into a private resort with 5-star bungalows? No, this is the new world we live in, where the speculation and privatization of the last beautiful natural habitats in our devastated world is seen as a Darwinian solution to our problems. Brendon’s story on Moyenne Island gives us a perfect view of many of the problems and ideas that we are confronted with in this Brave New World, where organizations like the IMF and World Bank force small countries like the Seychelles to completely liberalize their economy in exchange for any future loans. So what trend can you really expect from a country where 81% of the jobs are related to the tourism industry? How can you ask these people to sacrifice the opportunity of more wealth and prosperity in exchange for environmental protectionism when the United States and Europe have not done the same? There is no one side to this argument and a solution does not seem around the corner. But Brendon remains hopeful and continues to get up every morning and dedicate his time, love and energy to an island that seems to deserve more than an uncertain future.

Englische Synopsis: This documentary is about a young Japanese artist, Maya Onoda, living and working in Brooklyn, New York. She considers herself as a 'nomad' and her art which she makes as her 'nomadic' home. Introducing her art, this documentary seeks what she is trying to do through making art and what her identity is like here in the United States, which is far away from her own country.

MAYA ONODA — Nomadic Home (USA 2008)
photo: Maya Onoda

Englische Werkbeschreibung: New York is an artworld center. But at the same time, there are also big issues of culture, identity and nationality for foreign artists. How does it influence the artists and their art to live and work in a foreign city? This documentary is about Maya Onoda, a Japanese artist living and working in New York City. She came to the United States ten years ago and she studied art at California State University. After she earned a BFA there, she moved to New York, which was about 4 years ago. She received a MFA at Pratt Institution in Brooklyn and currently she belongs to Magnan Projects Gallery in New York. Maya makes installation art. She considers herself as a “nomad” because she goes back and forth between two different cultures, American and Japanese cultures. She also calls her installation art as a “nomadic tent,” which means a portable home she can carry around anywhere with her. Her installation creates an intimate atmosphere. She uses materials which she collects in her daily life. She gives another lives to these materials by “recycling” them, turning them into art. These performances — collecting and recycling — are deeply related to her memory of her childhood and her mother. Most Japanese women, especially older generation, have habits of collecting things and making another things from old stuffs by recycling. Sewing which she often uses in her art is also related to her mother; her mother was good at dressmaking and Maya had often seen her mother sewing and making clothes for her. However, her art has not only a “Japanese” sense. After she moved to the United States, she discovered her own identity, which was not only as a Japanese, but as “herself.” That is another reason why she considers herself as a “nomad.” She maintains her true identity through making her art, her “nomadic home” in a foreign city.

Director's Bio: Rima Yamazaki is a documentary film/videomaker born in Japan, 1982, living and working in New York since 2006. She studied Sociology at Hitotsubashi University in Japan and earned a B.A. in Sociology. There she mainly studied about Muslim immigrants in European countries, but through making documentary videos based on field researches, her interest gradually shifted to visual art. She made her first documentary video “Color on Colors” in 2004, which is about a young Japanese artist, Satoshi Uchiumi. After she moved to New York in 2006, she started focusing on making documentaries on art and artists, such as “In the Studios: 6 MFA Students at Hunter College in New York” and “MAYA ONODA: Nomadic Home.” Now she is also interested in cultural relationships and artists living in the globalized world.

Englische Synopsis: In 1945, a Japanese balloon bomb claimed the lives of the only people killed on the continental U.S. as the result of enemy action during WWII. Forty years later, the decision to fold a thousand paper cranes would unite the Japanese and American civilians affected by this incident.

Englische Werkbeschreibung: During WWII, the Japanese military developed a new weapon intended to strike directly at the American continent – the balloon bomb. High school girls across Japan were conscripted into factories where they built thousands of balloons made of paper. These balloons were then attached to bombs and launched into the jet stream to drift toward North America. On May 5th, 1945, a pastor, his pregnant wife, and five children departed on a picnic in Southern Oregon. When they found an un-detonated balloon bomb, the device exploded, killing the pastor’s wife and all five children. They became the only people killed on the continental U.S. as the result of enemy action during WWII. Forty years later, a Japanese American man who had spent his wartime years in an internment camp found out about these deaths. He knew several women in Japan who as young girls had been forced to work on the balloon bombs, and the news of these deaths shocked and saddened them. These women decided to fold a thousand paper cranes to offer to the families of those killed in Oregon, and the groups eventually all met face to face. The friendships formed since have helped citizens on both sides of the Pacific cope with the tragedies they experienced during WWII. This is the story of four Japanese women who worked on balloon bombs, the families of those killed in Oregon, and the man whose actions brought them all together forty years after WWII, and the balloon bomb project.

Director's Bio: Ilana Sol is a filmmaker who lives and works in Portland, Oregon (USA). She has worked in the film industry for twelve years on a variety of independent, educational and commercial projects. When her hobby of historical research led her to find out about the Japanese balloon bombs, she soon found herself spending hundreds of hours researching these bizarre weapons, and traveling thousands of miles to meet with those affected by them. Truth is often stranger than fiction, and this has solidified her love of documentary filmmaking. She is the recipient of grants from the Oregon Council for the Humanities, the Regional Arts and Culture Council, and the Oregon Heritage Commission. “On Paper Wings” is her first film.

Naming Pluto (UK 2008) poster motief

Englische Werkbeschreibung: This is the story of the Venetia Burney Phair, the only person alive to have ever named a planet. As an 11-year-old Oxford schoolgirl in March 1930, she came up with the suggestion for the name of the newly discovered Planet X over a family breakfast and making a unique contribution to scientific history. On August 24 2006, Venetia witnesses another moment in Pluto’s life, when the International Astronomical Union formally downgrades Pluto to a dwarf planet, splitting the scientific community and undoing 70 years of learning for millions of children around the world.

Naming Pluto (UK 2008)>Naming Pluto (UK 2008)

This film focuses on a previously undocumented chapter of astronomical history and is privy to exclusive interviews with Venetia and her collection of impeccably preserved scrap books painstakingly managed by her grandfather, Falconer Madan, at the time of Planet X’s discovery. Telegrams, letters, photographs and 1930’s press cuttings support his granddaughter’s involvement in astronomical history. Weeks following Pluto's demotion Sir Patrick Moore, CBE, renowned author and astronomer invites Venetia to view Pluto through his home telescope but because of its vast distance from Earth, a conclusive viewing of the planet does not materialise. Venetia waits one year later for another opportunity to view Pluto, this time at the Science Observatory in Herstmonceux, England. And bizarrely, on the eve of her 89th birthday. The film also includes interviews from Sir Patrick Moore, Robert Massey of the Royal Astronomical Society and the support of Nasa, the Bodleian Library Oxford and Cambridge University. This is Naming Pluto. Sadly, Venetia passed away on April 30th, aged 90. This screening at Globians Doc Fest Berlin is dedicated to her memory.

Englische Synopsis: Is it possible that some people can read your mind (Telepathy)? ;or look into the future (Clairvoyancy)? How come some people can cure themselves while in the last stages of a deadly cancer? (Healing). Does mind over matter really exist, and if so, how do we explain this? (Telekinesis). In the US millions of people claim to ‘see’ distant objects or places (Remote Viewing); are they fooling us, or do they really see something? Do we have quantum-brains? And where is the boundary between 'real' magical powers and fraud? Can these ‘miracles of the mind’ be explained? Answers These and more questions will be answered in the documentary “Something Unknown Is Doing We Don’t Know What” (100 min.). This is a road movie, where filmmaker Renée Scheltema sets out to the US to meet prominent scientists with solid credentials who are doing research in this field, to see if there is any scientific evidence of psychic phenomena(‘psi’). Englische Synopsis: 'Fremont, U.S.A.' explores conflict and cooperation in a religiously diverse California city.

Fremont, USA (USA 2008) still

Englische Werkbeschreibung: Fremont, U.S.A. offers a glimpse of religious diversity on the local level. Fremont, California is a city transformed by new immigration; here, the majority ethnic group is now Asian. A rajagopuram rises in a tidy suburban neighborhood, announcing the vital presence of the Hindu community. The diversity of the global Buddhist community is also in evidence, as Thai, Chinese, and Burmese temples – and a women’s monastic retreat center – dot the landscape. Fremont is home to Peace Terrace, where Muslims and Christians have built side by side, and Gurdwara Road, where a large Sikh community engages in creative forms of outreach. Through civic engagement and interfaith action, strangers have become neighbors in this American city. Yet Fremont has faced real challenges, especially after 9/11. When Alia Ansari, a Muslim woman, is murdered, some wonder if it was a hate crime. Was she killed because of her headscarf? How will the wider community respond? The film has six sections: Introduction: The mayor, city council members, and police chief offer a brief introduction to the City of Fremont, California as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. New Religious Landscape: As Fremont’s religious landscape has been transformed, new relationships are being forged in this multireligious city. Civic Engagement: The City of Fremont responds to its growing diversity, creating an innovative program for the elderly and responding to hate violence. New Challenges: After 9/11, Fremont faces new challenges and develops unprecedented outreach and bridge-building efforts. Alia Ansari: When a Muslim woman is brutally murdered while walking to school with her young daughter, the Fremont community is called upon to respond. Fremont Moves Forward: Amidst challenge and change, citizens in Fremont look to the future. The Pluralism Project at Harvard University developed Fremont, USA. For more than a decade, the Pluralism Project has studied and documented the new religious landscape of the United States. Dr. Diana L. Eck, Director of the Pluralism Project, narrates the film; it was produced and directed by Rachel Antell and Elinor Pierce.

Englische Synopsis: THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN BUY? is the first behind-the-scenes, comprehensive, non-partisan examination of the system of lobbying in Washington, DC.

Englische Werkbeschreibung: In Washington, DC, there are 535 elected representatives of the United States' people. There are also more than 30,000 lobbyists. During the 2008 presidential campaign, the subject of intense debate was: how much control should our elected bodies have over lobbyists, and over lobbying in general? THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN BUY? is the first behind-the-scenes, comprehensive, non-partisan examination of the system of lobbying in Washington, DC. Lobbyists control billions of dollars, which they use to try and influence legislation. In 2006-7, lobbyists spent $13.5 million a day. The drug lobby alone spent $155 million! Veteran documentary film-maker, British-born Francis Megahy, makes a journey of discovery as he tries to answer some questions which puzzle him: who provides the money? What effect does it have? How is it connected to the financing of political campaigns? And most crucial: is it in the public interest? The cost of election campaigns has spiraled out of control, to the extent that, on average, our representatives spend more than 25% of their time fund-raising. Even the President regularly interrupts the nation’s work in order to spend time fund-raising! Raising funds to get elected – that's the key interface between lobbyists and Members of Congress. Lobbyists have served as treasurers for at least 800 Political Action Committees and 68 campaign committees in the past six years. These committees spent more than $525 million to influence the political process. In fact, they spent more money than President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry combined raised in contributions during the 2004 presidential campaign. In the past six years, lobbyists have channeled more than $13 billion into the political process. It’s hard to imagine that such huge sums are spent to no effect.

The Best Government Money Can Buy? (USA 2009) Director Francis Megahy

THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN BUY? talks directly to key Washington insiders – who often speak with surprising candor. LOBBYISTS’ INFLUENCE Lobbyists have more than simple access to senators and representatives. Many of the laws of the United States are written not by its elected representatives, but by Lobbyists, who frequently draft the detailed legislation, which is then enacted by the elected representatives. At a later date, those same lobbyists will provide finance for the election campaigns of those same representatives. This astonishing practice is unknown in most democracies, and in some would result in legal prosecution. Lobbyists and their critics make passionate arguments on both sides of this issue. THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN BUY? asks: Is the public interest best served by the current state of affairs? THE REVOLVING DOOR A controversial aspect of the Lobby system is the so-called Revolving Door – elected representatives can work and vote on bills which favor a particular industry – and then leave Congress for highly paid jobs representing that same industry. In the past ten years, more than 250 elected representatives have left Congress to become lobbyists. The temptations of the revolving door aren’t a mystery. In 2004, Republican Representative, Billy Tauzin, was Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has authority over the drug industry. In June 2004, Mr. Tauzin was a principal author of the Medicare Prescription Drug law. That law bars the Federal Government from negotiating bulk discounts with drug-makers. After the passage of the Bill, Mr. Tauzin did not run for reelection, because he had a new job: President of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the chief lobby for brand-name drug companies At the rate at which we paid Tauzin to represent us in Congress – $154,400 a year – it would have taken him thirteen years to earn what the pharmaceutical industry now pays him each year: $2 million! Free Speech Lobbyists and Legislators tell THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN BUY? that Lobbying is not the exclusive purview of Unions or Big Business. It’s your right to band together with your fellow-citizens and make your opinions known to lawmakers. The defense of lobbying is based on the First Amendment: 'Congress shall make no law.... abridging the freedom of speech.... or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.' The American League of Lobbyists claims “ every interest in the United States uses lobbyists--a fact little known by the general public.... While most people think of lobbyists only as paid professionals, there are also many independent, volunteer lobbyists – all of whom are protected by the same First Amendment.” Any group of citizens can get together and pool their resources to create a lobby. But is it credible that ‘mom-and-apple pie’ interests can compete with the vast resources of corporate interests? Or, does the overwhelming and permanent advantage rest with those with the deepest pockets, vested interests, unions, and big corporations? Is the present situation truly what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they drafted the First Amendment? Finally... Lobbying is a perfectly open and legal activity; there is nothing secret about it. Yet the average citizen’s response to some of the stories we cover in this documentary will be one of astonishment. It is disturbing that in a democracy, such a powerful, effective and un-elected force, which is able to influence profound legislative changes affecting the lives of all Americans, can be so little known and so little understood by voters. Recent revisions in the rules governing lobbying sprang from a feeling expressed in the 2006 mid-term election that some “ethics” reform was necessary. But those changes have done nothing to cut off the flow of cash from lobbyists to political campaigns. THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN BUY? hopes that this documentary will go some way towards enlightening our fellow-citizens, by helping them to discover – as we discovered – just what goes on in Washington. We hope that it will provoke people into thinking afresh about lobbying, its effects on their lives, and whether or not they have any control over it.

Kurzinhalt: Ein filmisches Experiment — Kinder dürfen ihre Konflikte mit erwachsenen und ausgebildeten Schauspielern auf einer Theaterbühne inszenieren.

Replayground (USA 2009)

Englische Synopsis: I interviewed and filmed a group of students about their first year of school. After watching the footage I picked three kids to re-enact their story of an argument that took place in the schoolyard. Combining the three stories I wrote a script. Next I hired a casting director, set-up auditions with adult actors, and brought the students in to help cast their parts. We filmed each one sitting in on the session, interviewing the actors auditioning to play them. Afterwards each child chose an actor. After casting the actors the children each had the opportunity to direct the scene at a theatre near their school. As each one directed the adults through the re-enactment of the argument the story became something entirely new.

Englische Werkbeschreibung: There is always a subjective and emotional way of communicating an experience, where things become as real as your memory. Like in her former works Anna Gaskell sets the focus on these behaviours in social structures. The film, REPLAYGROUND presents a scene where the artist interviews a group of children in a kindergarten class. Within their conversations three of the children focus on a shared conflict. Because of their desire to revise the story these three children are invited to recreate the event. A casting director manages a series of auditions where the children interview actors for the role of themselves. Each child is filmed auditioning the different actors, we watch as they deliberate over whom will best represent them in the re-inaction. After choosing their adult selves, each child directs the actors through their individual version of the re-enactment of the argument. The children show the seriousness of their intent through their interpretation of the story. We watch as they struggle to maintain some kind of integrity within the social manners that they so quickly learn to mimic. After working with the children the three actors reinterpret by discussing the different points of view to find out what really happened. The actors perform their understanding of the of the children’s argument. As they perform the re-enactment, we see them confused and frustrated, as they can’t seem to agree on what took place during the conflict. As they perform the re-enactment, we see them confused and frustrated, as they can’t seem to agree on what took place during the conflict.
